Who may be able to join

Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You have been diagnosed with severe aplastic anemia (a condition where the bone marrow stops making enough blood cells)
  • Your bone marrow biopsy shows very low activity, with less than 20% of normal cell production
  • You have at least 2 of the following blood count problems: very low infection-fighting white blood cells, very low platelets (cells that help stop bleeding), or very low reticulocytes (young red blood cells)
  • You have a brother or sister whose tissue type (HLA) is a close match to yours and who can donate
  • Your liver is working reasonably well — blood tests show bilirubin levels below 3 times the normal range
  • Your kidneys are working reasonably well — blood tests show creatinine levels below 2 times the normal range
  • Your heart is working normally
  • You do not have HIV

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have certain genetic or chromosomal abnormalities in your blood cells, a condition called paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, or a bone marrow condition called myelodysplastic syndrome, diagnosed within 3 months of your aplastic anemia diagnosis
  • Your aplastic anemia was present from birth or is related to a genetic condition, including Fanconi anemia (an inherited disorder)
  • You have an active infection that is not being controlled
  • You have another serious illness alongside your aplastic anemia
  • You are able to have children but are not willing or able to use effective contraception during the trial
