Who might be able to join this trial:

• You have been diagnosed with a mild, symptom-free form of overactive parathyroid glands (confirmed by tissue testing)
• Your blood calcium levels have been slightly elevated (in a specific range) for at least 3 months
• Your parathyroid hormone level is above a certain threshold on blood tests
• You are at least 5 years past menopause
• Your bone density in your forearm is not severely reduced (within 2.0 standard units of the normal range for your sex, age, and race)
• Your kidneys are functioning reasonably well (confirmed with trial site)
• You have not had kidney stones in the past 2 years
• You live within 150 miles of downtown Detroit

Who may not be able to join:

• You have another medical reason for high blood calcium other than overactive parathyroid glands
• You have a family history of parathyroid problems, certain hormonal tumour conditions, or a related calcium disorder
• Hand X-rays show a specific type of bone damage around the finger bones (confirm with trial site)
• You have had radiation treatment to your head or neck during childhood
• You have a thyroid condition that has required or needs surgery
• You have previously taken steroid medications (glucocorticoids) or anti-seizure medications
• You are currently taking a type of water pill called a thiazide diuretic and are unwilling or unable to switch to a different type
• You currently experience excessive thirst, excessive urination, loss of appetite, nausea, or vomiting
• You have had pancreatitis within the last 12 months
• You currently have symptoms from a stomach ulcer
• You have noticeable muscle weakness
• You have had a broken bone in your spine or hip that was not caused by an injury
• An ultrasound of your heart showed unexpected findings that could affect surgery
• You have kidney stones visible on an abdominal X-ray
• You are currently taking part in another clinical trial
