Who may be able to join

Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are willing and able to give both spoken and written consent to take part
  • You have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes according to World Health Organization guidelines
  • Your HbA1c (a blood sugar control measurement) is between 7% and 11%, and you are managing it with diet changes and/or the medication metformin
  • You are older than 18 years of age
  • Your BMI (body weight-to-height ratio) is between 25 and 40
  • Certain blood tests for diabetes-related antibodies (ICA and GAD-65) have come back negative (confirm with trial site)

Who may not be able to join:

  • Women who are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning to become pregnant, or not using reliable contraception
  • People currently taking certain diabetes medications, including sulfonylureas, DPP-4 inhibitors, insulin, or glitazones (confirm with trial site if unsure about your medication)
  • People currently struggling with alcohol or drug misuse
  • People with significant liver problems shown in blood tests
  • People with significant kidney problems, including reduced kidney function or protein in the urine
  • People with serious heart conditions, such as severe heart failure, unstable chest pain, or a heart attack within the last 12 months
  • People with very high blood pressure that is not under control
  • People who have anaemia (low red blood cell levels)
  • People with any other condition that the trial investigators believe would affect their ability to participate
  • People who have taken part in another clinical drug trial within the last 3 months
