Who may be able to join

Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder (type I or II) and are currently going through a major depressive episode.
  • You are between 18 and 70 years old.
  • Your depressive symptoms have lasted for at least one month and are serious enough to be considered a major depressive episode.
  • Your depression has been measured as moderate to severe using a standard rating scale (a score above 20 on the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale).
  • You have not started any new antidepressant or other mental health medications, and have not had your current medications increased, in the 4 weeks before joining the study.

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have an unstable medical condition, a neurological disorder, any history of seizures, or you are currently pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • In the doctor's judgement, your risk of suicide is serious enough that you need immediate electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
  • You currently have a diagnosis of substance abuse or addiction, a personality disorder, or another major mental health condition alongside your bipolar disorder.
