Who may be able to join
Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with a major depressive episode that has lasted no more than 3 years.
- You have been diagnosed with bipolar disorder type I or type II.
- Your depression has been measured as moderately severe or worse using a standard rating scale (a score of 20 or more on the Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale).
- You are 18 years of age or older.
- You may or may not currently be taking antidepressant medication.
Who may not be able to join:
- You are unable to give informed consent to participate in the trial.
- You have already tried ECT (electroconvulsive therapy) during your current episode of depression and it did not work.
- You have another significant mental health diagnosis, such as schizophrenia.
- You are considered to be in immediate danger, either physically or mentally, or need very urgent medical treatment due to severe symptoms, psychosis, or a high risk of suicide.
- You currently have, or are dependent on, alcohol or other substances.
- You have a history of a neurological condition (such as epilepsy) or have previously had brain surgery.
- You have any metal in your head, or a pacemaker, cochlear implant, medication pump, or other electronic device in your body.
- You are a woman of childbearing age where pregnancy cannot be ruled out.
- You have a history of your mood suddenly shifting to the opposite extreme (such as from depression to mania) in response to treatments.

Primary endpoints
All measures at baseline and at the end of each week of treatment in the blind phase and after every 2 weeks of treatment in the open phase.; Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS); Clinical Global Impressions Scale (CGI)
