Who may be able to join

Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Your Body Mass Index (BMI) is between 25 and 35 (overweight to moderately obese range)
  • You have visible signs of excess male hormones, such as unwanted hair growth (hirsutism) or acne
  • You have irregular or absent periods, and/or your ovaries show a polycystic pattern on an ultrasound scan

Note: There is also a control group for women without these conditions, who have a BMI between 25 and 35 and regular 26–30 day cycles with no signs of excess male hormones.

Who may not be able to join:

  • You are older than 38 years of age
  • You have certain other hormonal or gland-related conditions, such as high prolactin levels, a specific type of adrenal gland disorder, or a hormone-secreting tumour (confirm with trial site)
  • You have an autoimmune disease, cancer, Type 1 diabetes, or Type 2 diabetes
  • You have taken certain medications — including steroids, antidepressants, diabetes medications, hormonal contraceptives, or other drugs the trial team considers relevant — within the last 12 weeks
  • Your blood pressure is higher than 160/100 mmHg
  • You are currently pregnant or have been breastfeeding within the last 6 months
  • You have had acupuncture treatment within the last 2 months
  • There is a significant language barrier or another factor that affects your ability to fully understand the information provided about the trial
