Who may be able to join

Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are a woman of Mexican origin who is less than 16 weeks pregnant
  • You have had a normal blood sugar test (a glucose tolerance test using 75g over 2 hours)
  • You meet 3 or more of the following conditions:
    • Your body weight falls into the higher range for your height (BMI over 27 kg/m²)
    • You are older than 25 years of age
    • You have a history of difficulty getting pregnant due to polycystic ovary syndrome (a hormonal condition affecting the ovaries)
    • You have previously had a baby that was very large at birth (over 4,000g or about 8.8 lbs)
    • A parent, sibling, or grandparent has been diagnosed with diabetes
    • You had diabetes during a previous pregnancy

Who may not be able to join:

  • You had any type of diabetes before becoming pregnant
  • Your fasting blood sugar level was above a certain level at your first prenatal check-up
  • Your kidneys are not working at full capacity, shown by a blood test result (confirm with trial site)
  • You have an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism)
  • You have a heart condition
  • You have a liver condition
  • You have a kidney disease
  • You have epilepsy
  • You have lupus (an immune system condition)
  • You have long-term high blood pressure
