Who may be able to join
Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with a Major Depressive Episode according to standard psychiatric guidelines (DSM-IV).
- Your depression has been rated as moderately severe or worse, based on a standard scoring tool called the MADRS (a score of 20 or more).
Who may not be able to join:
- You have ever been diagnosed with a psychotic disorder, or currently have (or have had in the past year) an eating disorder or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or have ever been diagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder or intellectual disability.
- You have had problems with drug or alcohol abuse or dependence in the last 3 months (not including nicotine or caffeine).
- Your depression has not responded to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) during this current episode of depression.
- You regularly take medication from the benzodiazepine family (such as sleeping tablets or anti-anxiety medication) and it would not be safe for you to stop taking it.
- Your condition requires very urgent treatment because of severe weight loss, psychosis, or a high risk of suicide.
- You have a neurological condition or have had a brain injury (such as a recent stroke) that could make the treatment risky for you.
- You have any metal in your skull, holes or defects in your skull, or cuts, sores, or a rash on your scalp where the treatment pads would be placed.
- You are pregnant, or are of childbearing age, sexually active, and not using a reliable form of contraception (a urine pregnancy test will be required).
- You are not fluent in English.
