Who may be able to join
Who might be able to join this trial:
- Women who have higher-than-normal levels of male hormones (androgens), measured by at least one of four specific hormone tests (total testosterone, androstenedione, free androgen index, or DHEAS)
- Women who have normal levels of all four of these male hormones (these women may serve as a comparison group)
Who may not be able to join:
- Women who have a condition where the brain does not properly signal the reproductive organs to function (confirm with trial site)
- Women who have abnormally high levels of the hormone prolactin
- Women who have a hormone condition called congenital adrenal hyperplasia
- Women whose ovaries have stopped working earlier than expected (premature ovarian failure)
- Women who have a tumour that produces male hormones
- Women who have Cushing's syndrome (a condition caused by too much of the stress hormone cortisol)
- Women who have any other hormone or body-wide illness that could affect their reproductive health
- Women who have structural problems with the uterus (such as scarring inside the womb or a uterus that did not develop normally) or certain chromosomal conditions (such as Turner's syndrome)
- Women whose first period started less than three years before the study began
- Women with a specific hormone reading (day 3 FSH above 15 mIU/ml) suggesting reduced ovarian function
- Women whose medical or test records are incomplete
- Women who have cysts or tumours on their ovaries found during an ultrasound scan
