Who may be able to join

Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You have been diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) that has been stable for at least 12 months, with kidney function test results falling within a specific range (eGFR between 16 and 60 ml/min/m²).
  • You have been referred for a CT scan to check for a possible blood clot in the lungs, lung cancer, a problem with the main blood vessel from the heart, or a narrowing of the arteries leading to the kidneys.

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have been diagnosed with the mildest (stages 1–2) or the most severe (stage 5) form of Chronic Kidney Disease.
  • You have moderate to severe heart failure (stage 3 or 4).
  • You have a specific type of irregular or fast heartbeat called irregular supraventricular tachycardia (confirm with trial site).
  • You have a known allergy to the type of dye used in CT scans (iodinated contrast dye).
  • You have a known allergy to a medication called Mucomyst (also known as acetylcysteine).
  • You are pregnant.
  • You are currently experiencing sudden or acute kidney failure.
  • Your blood bicarbonate level (a measure of chemical balance in your blood) is either too low (below 20 meq/L) or too high (above 35 meq/L).
  • Your doctors have determined that receiving fluids containing bicarbonate would not be safe for you.
