Who may be able to join

Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You (or someone close to you, or your doctor) have noticed that your memory is not as good as it used to be
  • You scored below a certain level on a standard memory test, based on how many years of schooling you completed (confirm with trial site for your specific score)
  • You scored between 24 and 30 on a common mental sharpness test called the Mini-Mental State Exam
  • A doctor has assessed your memory and thinking as mildly affected, but not severely enough to be diagnosed with Alzheimer's dementia
  • You are between 55 and 90 years old
  • Any medications you are taking have been at a stable dose for at least 4 weeks (or 12 weeks for certain memory-related medications)
  • You scored 14 or lower on a standard depression screening questionnaire
  • You have a friend or family member who sees you for about 10 or more hours per week and can come to most study visits with you
  • Your vision and hearing are good enough to complete thinking and memory tests
  • You are in generally good health, with no conditions expected to interfere with the study
  • You are not pregnant, breastfeeding, or able to become pregnant (women must be at least 2 years past menopause or have had a surgical procedure making pregnancy impossible)
  • You completed at least 6 years of school, or have a solid work history
  • You speak English or Spanish fluently

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have used tobacco or nicotine products regularly in the past year (including cigarettes, cigars, pipes, chewing tobacco, e-cigarettes, nicotine patches, gum, or sprays)
  • You have been diagnosed with a significant brain or neurological condition, such as Alzheimer's dementia, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, or have had a serious head injury with lasting effects
  • You have had major depression or bipolar disorder in the past year, or have had agitation, psychosis, or significant behavioural problems in the past 3 months
  • You have a history of schizophrenia
  • You have had problems with alcohol or drug misuse or dependence in the past 2 years
  • You have a serious or unstable medical condition, such as uncontrolled high blood pressure, uncontrolled diabetes, or significant heart, lung, kidney, liver, or hormonal problems
  • You have had a cancer diagnosis in the past 5 years, with some exceptions for certain minor skin cancers or treated localised cancers (confirm with trial site)
  • You have significantly abnormal levels of vitamin B12 or thyroid hormones that could affect the study
  • You have significantly abnormal results on blood tests or a heart trace (ECG) done at screening
  • You currently live in a skilled nursing facility
  • You are taking certain medications not allowed in the study, including some drugs that affect brain chemistry, or any experimental medication taken within the past 30 days or longer (confirm with trial site for full medication list)
  • For participants in the spinal fluid part of the study: you have a blood clotting or bleeding disorder, or abnormal clotting test results
  • For participants in the MRI part of the study: you are unable to have an MRI scan due to claustrophobia, metal implants in your body, or a pacemaker
  • The study doctor at the trial site considers you unsuitable for any other reason
