Who might be able to join this trial:

• You are 18 years of age or older
• You have been admitted to a Digestive, Oncology, or Surgery department within the last 48 hours
• You have one of the following conditions: acute pancreatitis, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, or inflammatory bowel disease
• OR you have been admitted for cancer of the esophagus, stomach, colon, rectum, or pancreas — either for surgery or a follow-up stay
• OR you have ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease and have been admitted because surgery is recommended
• You are willing and able to sign a consent form agreeing to take part

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have a serious physical illness, serious mental health condition, or are in the final stages of a terminal illness
• People who have significant problems with their senses (such as hearing or vision) that would make participation difficult (confirm with trial site)
• People who do not understand Spanish or Basque
• People who are unable to give their own consent to participate
• People who are unable to complete the study questionnaires for any reason
• People admitted for colon or rectal cancer surgery that was found through a routine screening programme (unless they are later admitted due to complications of their cancer)
• People under 18 years of age
• People who are pregnant
• People admitted to a critical care or intensive care unit
• People whose hospital stay is expected to be less than 72 hours
• People admitted to a psychiatry unit
• People admitted specifically to investigate unexplained weight loss
• People who do not wish to take part or who do not sign the consent form
