Who may be able to join
Who might be able to join this trial:
For patients:
- Your cognitive decline started no more than 24 months ago
- Your score on a standard memory and thinking test (CDR) is 2 or lower
- Your score on another thinking and memory test (MoCA) is 17 or lower
For healthy volunteers (controls):
- You have no complaints about memory or thinking problems, and have not seen a specialist for such concerns
- Your CDR score is 0 (no cognitive impairment)
- Your MoCA score is 27 or higher
For everyone:
- You are aged between 50 and 80 years old
- Your score on a scale that checks for signs of stroke-related thinking problems is below 2 (confirm with trial site)
- Your vision and/or hearing is good enough to complete memory and thinking tests
- If you are taking any medication that affects the brain or nervous system, your dose has been stable for at least 4 weeks before the study begins
Who may not be able to join:
- You have an uncontrolled medical condition or brain/nerve disease that could be affecting your memory or thinking (for example, kidney disease, liver disease, brain tumour, alcohol or drug misuse, thyroid problems, or certain types of dementia)
- You have had a mini-stroke or stroke in the 12 months before screening
- You have had unstable chest pain, a heart attack, significant heart failure, or serious heart rhythm problems within the past year
- You have a history of cancer, unless it has been in full remission for more than 5 years, or you have non-spreading prostate cancer, or a type of skin cancer (squamous cell or basal cell) that was fully removed by surgery
- You have impaired liver function or liver failure
- You have an autoimmune disease that your doctor considers significant, or that requires long-term use of steroids or drugs that suppress the immune system
- You have had a significant illness or infection in the 30 days before screening
- You have a primary psychiatric or neurological disorder alongside your current condition
- You do not have a family member, partner, or close friend who knows you well enough to give reliable information about your memory and daily abilities
- You are unable to have an MRI scan for any reason
