Who might be able to join this trial:
- You must be 18 years old or older.
- People of any gender or ethnic background are welcome.
- You have been diagnosed with one of the following solid cancers at any stage: lung, esophageal, stomach, bile duct/pancreas, colorectal, melanoma, or sarcoma.
- You may also be eligible if you have no history of cancer and are having surgery for a non-cancer-related reason (to serve as a comparison participant).
- If you are having cancer surgery, your cancer should ideally have been confirmed by a tissue sample (biopsy), but you may still qualify if imaging and your doctor's assessment strongly suggest cancer — no extra biopsies or tests will be done just for this study.
- You must be able to understand and sign a consent form agreeing to take part.
Who may not be able to join:
- Women who are pregnant cannot participate.
- If you currently have a second active cancer (other than a common type of minor skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma) and there are signs the cancer is active or you are currently receiving chemotherapy, you will not be eligible.
- If your blood count (specifically haemoglobin) is below a certain low level on the morning of your procedure, you will not be eligible.
- If you need a large blood transfusion (more than 4 units of red blood cells) during surgery, no further blood samples for this study will be collected during or the day after your operation.
- If you have a bleeding or clotting disorder (such as haemophilia or very low platelet counts) that requires preventive treatment before procedures, the bone marrow sampling part of the study will not be performed on you.
