Phase 3 counts are currently recruiting Phase 3 trials from the latest nightly condition snapshot (sourced from ClinicalTrials.gov), the same source as the Australian site counts beside them. Australian site counts come from ClinicalTrials.gov only: trials registered solely with ANZCTR are not counted, so the Australian bars understate local access and the gap shown is a maximum, not a measurement. Site flags may not capture every location. Verify current status on individual condition pages.

Government health research funding: Australia vs peers

How much a government budgets for health research, compared across a few countries. This is the OECD's measure of government budget allocations for R&D directed at health (GBARD, socio-economic objective 07). It is a funding commitment, not health spending, not the number of trials running, and not whether Australians can access them.

Not adjusted for population. These are whole-country totals, not per-person figures, and they are not adjusted for how many people each country has. A country with a larger population will tend to show a larger total whatever its priorities, so this comparison understates Australia against more populous countries such as the United Kingdom and overstates it against smaller ones such as New Zealand. Read the bars as the size of each budget, not as how strongly a country favours health research, and do not read the order as a ranking of commitment.

Australia's figure here is 1,092 in constant 2020 prices. On a current-prices basis the same budget is 1,407, about 29% higher, so the price basis is stated rather than left to chance. Australia's own figure is also defined differently to other countries, estimated, and provisional in the OECD's records, which is why it is best read as an order-of-magnitude comparison, not an exact ranking.

Source: the nightly condition snapshot (condition_monthly_snapshots.phase3_count), recomputed from the full trials table of ClinicalTrials.gov data. This is a narrower measure than the cumulative pipeline dataset, which counts registered trials of any status.

These numbers overlap and do not add up to 910. A trial running in both Melbourne and Sydney is available to patients in both states, so it is counted in both. Adding the column together would count the same trial several times.

Of the 910 recruiting trials we track with an Australian site, we can place 848 (93%) in a specific state. The remaining 62 list an Australian location without a state or postcode we can resolve, so they are not in the chart above. We would rather leave them out than guess a state you might travel interstate on. Check the trial's own record for its exact locations.

These conditions have no recruiting Australian trial in the registries we sync. We do not yet include the Australian New Zealand Clinical Trials Registry (ANZCTR), and some Australian trials register only there, so this list likely overstates the gap. Search ANZCTR directly before concluding no Australian trial exists.

This metric requires paired FDA approval and PBS listing dates, which accumulate over time as drugs progress through the access chain. It is not yet statistically meaningful and is withheld until it is.

Counted over the 149 sponsors in our sponsor directory, with each organisation's alternative registry spellings merged so it is counted once rather than split across them. A trial is counted once per sponsor however many conditions it is tagged to. This is a different measure from the sponsor table on our statistics page, which ranks by total trials on record rather than by trials recruiting now.
