Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes
- You are 50 years of age or older
- Your blood sugar levels are reasonably controlled, with an HbA1c (a measure of average blood sugar over time) of 10.0% or below
- You have a score between 10 and 29 on the Beck Depression Inventory, which is a standard questionnaire used to measure symptoms of depression (mild to moderate range)
- If you are able to have children, you are willing and able to use contraception during the trial
- You understand what the study involves, including the risks and alternatives, and are willing to sign a consent form to take part
Who may not be able to join:
- You have Type 1 diabetes, a form of diabetes caused by another medical condition, or diabetes that developed during pregnancy
- You are currently receiving treatment for dementia or taking medication for depression or other mood disorders
- You have a psychiatric (mental health) condition that is not currently under control
- You scored 30 or above on the Beck Depression Inventory depression questionnaire
- You drink heavily or consume large amounts of alcohol regularly
- You have a long-term liver condition, such as liver scarring (cirrhosis), liver cancer, chronic viral hepatitis, or certain other liver diseases
- You have a known allergy or sensitivity to the medication being studied or any of its ingredients
- You have significant kidney problems or reduced kidney function, or you are currently on dialysis
- Your liver function blood tests show results more than three times above the normal range
- You have had problems with alcohol or drug misuse in the past 3 months
- You are a woman who has not yet gone through menopause and are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have HIV or AIDS
- You have chronic inflammation of the pancreas (chronic pancreatitis) or pancreatic cancer
