Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People diagnosed with a liver condition called PSC (Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis) who are between 18 and 85 years old at the time of joining the study.
  • People diagnosed with a liver condition called PBC (Primary Biliary Cholangitis) who are between 18 and 85 years old at the time of joining the study.
  • People with PSC or PBC who have previously had a liver transplant may still be able to join, though they would not be able to take part in a specific bile collection procedure.
  • Women with PSC or PBC who are pregnant or could become pregnant are welcome to join, as the study poses no known risk to an unborn child.
  • Healthy people with no history of PSC, PBC, or any other long-term liver disease, who are between 18 and 85 years old, may join as a comparison (control) group.
  • People between 18 and 85 who do not have PSC or PBC but do have another type of long-term liver disease may also be able to join as a comparison group.

Who may not be able to join:

  • People with PSC or PBC who also have another long-term liver disease at the same time.
  • People who are not able to give their own informed consent to participate in the study.
  • People who are currently in prison or living in an institution.
  • People with PSC who have had a liver transplant will not be able to take part in the bile collection procedure specifically.
  • People who have previously had a type of bowel surgery called a Roux-en-Y procedure will not be able to take part in the bile collection procedure specifically.
