Who might be able to join this trial:
For the bariatric (weight-loss surgery) groups:
- Men and women between 18 and 60 years old
- People with a BMI of 35 or higher
- People who either have type 2 diabetes (confirmed by blood sugar or HbA1c testing, or currently taking diabetes medication) or do not have diabetes (confirmed by normal blood sugar and HbA1c results)
- People who are already on a waiting list for bariatric (weight-loss) surgery
For the control group (no surgery):
- People with a BMI between 25.0 and 29.9 (considered overweight range)
- People without diabetes or pre-diabetes, based on blood sugar and HbA1c test results
- People whose weight has been stable for the past 3 months
Who may not be able to join:
For the bariatric groups:
- People with type 1 diabetes
- People with certain health conditions affecting bone health, such as uncontrolled thyroid disease, serious kidney problems, metabolic bone disease, or certain digestive disorders (confirm with trial site)
- People taking certain medications that affect bone health, such as steroids, anti-epileptic drugs, osteoporosis treatments, or certain diabetes medications called thiazolidinediones (confirm with trial site)
- People with a BMI above 60
- People whose body size makes it physically impossible to undergo a CT scan
- Women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant during the study, or women of childbearing age who are not willing to use an appropriate form of contraception during the study
- People who have previously had surgery on the oesophagus, stomach, or digestive system
- People who have previously had bariatric surgery
- People with a cancer that may return during the study period
- People with a prosthetic implant that could interfere with the imaging results
- People with a serious ongoing illness that would prevent participation in the study
Additional exclusions for the control group only:
- People whose weight has changed by more than 5% in the last 3 months
- People who have been pregnant or breastfeeding within the last year
