Who might be able to join this trial:
- You must be older than 18 years old.
- People of any gender or ethnicity may participate.
- You may be eligible if you have been diagnosed with a solid cancer (such as lung, esophageal, stomach, bile duct/pancreas, bowel, melanoma, or sarcoma) at any stage.
- People without any history of cancer who are having surgery for a non-cancer-related reason may also be eligible to participate as a comparison group.
- Your cancer diagnosis should ideally have been confirmed by a biopsy, but you may still be included if doctors strongly suspect cancer based on scans and your clinical picture, even without a confirmed biopsy.
- You must be able to understand and sign a consent form agreeing to take part.
- For a lung cancer screening part of the trial, you must be between 55 and 80 years old, have smoked heavily for many years (30 pack-years or more), and either still smoke or have quit within the last 15 years.
Who may not be able to join:
- Women who are pregnant cannot participate.
- If you currently have a second active cancer (other than a common type of minor skin cancer called basal cell carcinoma) and either have signs of that cancer being active or are currently receiving chemotherapy for it, you would not be eligible.
- If your blood count (haemoglobin) is below 8g/dl on the morning of your procedure, you cannot take part.
- If you need a large blood transfusion (more than 4 units of red blood cells) during surgery, no further blood samples for the study will be taken from you during or after the operation.
- If you have a blood clotting disorder (such as haemophilia or very low platelets) that requires you to receive clotting products as a precaution, a bone marrow sample will not be taken from you as part of this study.
