Who might be able to join this trial:
For people planning weight-loss surgery:
- You are planning to have a type of weight-loss surgery called a gastric bypass (RYGB)
- You are between 18 and 80 years old
- You have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes
- Your weight has been stable for at least 3 months
- Your body mass index (BMI) is 30 or above (classified as obese)
- You qualify for this surgery through the NHS under NICE 2014 guidelines
For healthy volunteers:
- You are between 18 and 80 years old
- You are male or female
- Your BMI is between 19 and 25 (considered a healthy weight range)
- Your weight has been stable for at least 3 months
Who may not be able to join:
For people planning weight-loss surgery:
- You are currently pregnant
- You are unable to give your consent to take part
- You have Type 1 diabetes
- You have low levels of a substance called C-peptide, which is linked to insulin production (confirm with trial site)
- You have diabetes caused by another condition, or your insulin-producing cells are not working (confirm with trial site)
- You are unable to have a DEXA body scan, or you have liver disease, fluid build-up in the abdomen, cancer, or another condition that may affect body fat measurements
- You are a current smoker
- You have taken part in another clinical trial in the last 3 months
- You are unable to understand English
For healthy volunteers:
- You have abnormal blood sugar levels or an abnormal fasting glucose test
- You have a medical condition or take any medications (including over-the-counter products) that the research team believe could affect the study
- You do not have access to a telephone at home, or there is another reason you may find it difficult to take part reliably
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding
- You are unable to use adequate contraception for the full duration of the study
- You have donated blood in the past 3 months, or plan to do so before the study ends
- You are a current smoker
- You have taken part in another clinical trial in the last 3 months
- You are unable to understand English
