Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are male
- People between 18 and 25 years old
- People diagnosed with type 2 diabetes before the age of 21
- People with a uric acid level of 5 mg/dl or higher (as measured by a blood test)
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a condition called Glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) deficiency
- People with allergies to seafood or iodine
- People who are unable to have an MRI scan, including those with severe claustrophobia, certain implanted medical devices that are not safe for MRI, or who weigh 450 pounds or more
- People whose HbA1c (a measure of long-term blood sugar levels) is 12% or higher
- People who were diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) or a severe high blood sugar episode within the past month
- People with congestive heart failure (a condition where the heart does not pump blood effectively)
- People with a history of multiple or severe allergic reactions, including life-threatening allergic reactions (anaphylaxis)
- People currently taking medications that lower uric acid levels, such as allopurinol or febuxostat
- People currently taking certain specific medications, including pegvisomant, pegvaliase, peginterferon alfa 2b, peginterferon alfa 2a, pegfilgrastim, pegaspargase, pegaptanib, pegademase, or certolizumab pegol (confirm with trial site if unsure about any medications)
- People who have taken part in another clinical research study within the 2 weeks before joining this trial
