Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who have tested positive for hepatitis B surface antigen, or have had detectable hepatitis B virus in their blood, for more than 6 months
- People aged between 12 and 65 years old
- People whose blood test shows a bilirubin level (a measure of liver stress) more than 10 times the normal upper limit
- People whose blood clotting tests show reduced clotting ability, specifically a prothrombin time activity below 40% or a prothrombin time international ratio above 1.5 (confirm with trial site if unsure what these mean)
- People who have not taken antiviral medications known as nucleotide or nucleoside analogues in the past 6 months
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have other active liver diseases in addition to hepatitis B
- People who have liver cancer or any other type of cancer
- People who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
- People who have HIV infection or a condition where the immune system does not work properly from birth
- People who have severe diabetes or autoimmune diseases
- People who have serious problems affecting other major organs in the body
- People who are currently taking steroid medications known as glucocorticoids
- People who would not be able to attend follow-up appointments as required by the trial
- People whom the trial investigator considers unsuitable for the trial for any other reason
