Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You must be 18 years of age or older
  • Both men and women can participate, but women must have a negative pregnancy test and be using effective contraception
  • You must have been diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) according to a standard set of medical guidelines called the Rome IV criteria
  • Your average pain level over the 7 days before joining must be rated at least 4 out of 10 on a pain scale

Who may not be able to join:

  • You are currently breastfeeding
  • You have diabetes
  • You have significant liver problems or moderate kidney disease (confirm with trial site)
  • You have an addiction to alcohol or drugs
  • You are taking anti-epilepsy medications for epilepsy or long-term pain
  • You have another chronic pain condition that is more severe than your IBS pain
  • You have a known allergy to certain medications called succinimides (such as ethosuximide, methsuximide, or phensuximide) or to pentoxifylline
  • You have a history of, or currently have, severe depression that required hospital treatment or long-term use of antidepressants
  • You have or have had a psychotic disorder
