Who might be able to join this trial:
- Children who were between 3 and 12 years old when their absence seizures (brief staring or "blank" episodes) started, and whose epilepsy fits the pattern of classic childhood absence epilepsy
- Children with normal intelligence or only mild learning difficulties
- Children whose brain wave test (EEG) shows a specific pattern called 3-per-second spike-wave discharges, typically triggered by deep breathing
- Children who are experiencing absence seizures on a daily basis
- Children who also have generalised convulsions (full seizures affecting the whole body) are still eligible to be considered
Who may not be able to join:
- Children who have previously been treated with any anti-seizure medication
- Children who have previously followed a ketogenic (high fat, low carbohydrate) diet for epilepsy or any other reason
- Children who have a condition called Glut1 deficiency syndrome
- Children who have a known metabolic condition that would make a specialised diet unsafe or unsuitable
- Children who have dietary restrictions that would prevent them from following a high fat, low carbohydrate diet
- Children who had epilepsy before the current diagnosis (though a history of febrile seizures, which are seizures caused by fever, is acceptable)
- Families who are unwilling to agree to the study procedures or to attend follow-up visits
