Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults aged 18 or older
- People who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes according to World Health Organization diagnostic standards
- People whose heart health allows a specific type of low-radiation CT scan of the heart arteries to be performed at the start of the study
- People who are able to understand the purpose and steps of the study and are willing to sign a consent form
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had a coronary artery stent placed or have had heart bypass surgery
- People with severe lung disease (respiratory failure), significant liver problems (certain liver enzyme or bilirubin levels outside normal ranges), or reduced kidney function (confirm with trial site for exact kidney function thresholds), including people on dialysis
- People who have a malignant (cancerous) tumour
- People who have a mental illness or intellectual disability
- People who are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant
- People who have certain medical conditions that affect calcium levels in the body or cause calcium to build up in soft tissues, such as overactive parathyroid glands, sarcoidosis, or amyloidosis
- People who have a known reason they cannot safely receive contrast dye, which is used during the CT scan
- People whom the research team determines are unlikely to be able to follow the study requirements through to completion
