Who might be able to join this trial:

For patients with epilepsy:

  • You have epilepsy that has not been controlled by medications (drug-resistant focal epilepsy)
  • You are between 3 and 19 years old
  • You are already planned to have a two-stage epilepsy surgery that involves placing electrodes on the surface of the brain

For healthy volunteers (comparison group):

  • You are between 5 and 19 years old
  • You do not have any problems with thinking, movement, language, or behavior
  • Your brain MRI scan has been reviewed and found to be normal

Who may not be able to join:

  • You were born prematurely or had a lack of oxygen to the brain around the time of birth
  • You have weakness or paralysis on one side of your body
  • You have physical features that suggest a specific genetic or developmental syndrome (confirm with trial site)
  • You have been diagnosed with autism, tic disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, or another developmental or psychiatric condition that started before your seizures began
  • Your MRI shows very large or severe brain abnormalities that would interfere with the brain scans used in this study (confirm with trial site)
  • You have a history of feeling very anxious or panicked in small, enclosed spaces (claustrophobia)
  • Your MRI scan was not usable due to too much head movement during the scan
  • You are not able to speak English
