Who might be able to join this trial:
- People between 21 and 65 years old, of East Asian background, of any gender
- People with a BMI between 27.5 and 50
- People who have had Type 2 diabetes for at least 6 months
- People whose HbA1c (a blood sugar control measure) is 7.0% or above
- People currently taking one or more diabetes medications by mouth or injection, including insulin or a GLP-1 type medication
- People who a specialist team has recommended for one of two specific weight-loss stomach surgeries (OAGB or RYGB)
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had surgery on their stomach, small intestine, or any weight-loss surgery
- People whose fasting C-peptide level (a marker of insulin production) is below half the normal minimum range
- People who currently have an active stomach or intestinal ulcer
- People who currently have a Helicobacter pylori infection (a type of stomach bacteria)
- People with a history of serious heart or stroke-related conditions, such as a heart attack or stroke
- People with a history of liver cirrhosis of any severity
- People with a history of chronic kidney disease where kidney function falls below a certain level (confirm with trial site)
- People who currently have inflammatory bowel disease, such as ulcerative colitis or Crohn's disease
- People with chronic anaemia — specifically, male participants with haemoglobin below 100g/L or female participants below 90g/L
- People who are planning to conceive during the study period
- People with uncontrolled mental health or psychological conditions
- People with a serious illness where life expectancy is less than 5 years, or a current or previous cancer diagnosis
- People who are already participating in another clinical trial that may conflict with this study
- People who are unable or unwilling to understand the study details and provide signed consent
- People with gallstones that require surgical removal of the gallbladder
- People with acid reflux affecting the oesophagus at Grade B or above (confirm grading with trial site)
