Who might be able to join this trial:
- People diagnosed with a type of stomach cancer called gastric adenocarcinoma, where the cancer can be surgically removed and has not spread to distant parts of the body (clinical stage T1-4aN0-3M0)
- People who are considered fit enough to undergo surgery (based on a standard health rating scale called ASA, rated 1 to 3)
- People who are planned to have part or all of their stomach removed (open or keyhole surgery), including removal of nearby lymph nodes, with or without chemotherapy before or after surgery
- People aged 18 or older
- People who are able to fill in questionnaires written in Dutch, English, or Italian
- People who have given written consent to take part in the trial
- People whose cancer, if it involves the food pipe (oesophagus), does so by less than 2 cm from the top of the stomach lining, as confirmed by a camera examination (endoscopy)
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose stomach cancer is at an early stage classified as T1N0 (early tumour with no lymph node involvement)
- People whose cancer has spread locally in a way that requires removal of multiple surrounding organs
- People who are pregnant
- People who have had a previous cancer diagnosis — unless it was a minor skin cancer (non-melanoma), or a very small tumour of a specific type in the pancreas or digestive tract (less than 2 cm), or unless there is no current sign of that previous cancer AND it was diagnosed more than three years before the stomach cancer diagnosis, or the person has a life expectancy of more than five years from the time of joining the trial
- People with serious other health conditions that, in the judgement of the trial doctors, could put them at risk or prevent them from completing the study
- People who have had previous surgery on the stomach or the fatty tissue covering the intestines (omentum), except for surgery to repair a stomach perforation
- People whose surgery would require operating through or into the chest cavity (thoracotomy or thoracoscopy)
