Who might be able to join this trial:
All participants must meet these criteria:
- Adults aged 18 to 35 years old
- Able to give written, informed consent to participate
- Scores at or above 85 on a standard cognitive function test called the NIH Toolbox (age-adjusted)
- A native English speaker
- Right-handed
- Not currently pregnant
- Able to attend all required study sessions
- Passes safety screening for MRI and brain stimulation procedures (for example, no metal in the body, no implanted devices, no history of seizures, and no severe discomfort in enclosed spaces)
- Lives in or near Washington, DC, as the study takes place at American University and Georgetown University, and no travel or accommodation funding is available
People joining as adults with autism must also meet one of these criteria:
- Has a prior diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) confirmed through research-reliable methods, OR
- Meets the current diagnostic criteria for ASD, confirmed through a structured research assessment
Who may not be able to join:
For neurotypical (non-autistic) adults:
- People outside the 18 to 35 age range
- People who score below 85 on the NIH Toolbox cognitive function test
- People with safety concerns related to MRI or brain stimulation, such as metal in the body, a pacemaker or other implanted device, a history of seizures, or claustrophobia
- People with a current or past neurological condition, neurodevelopmental condition, or brain injury
- People currently taking or with a history of taking psychiatric or mood-related medications
- People who are pregnant
For adults with autism:
- People outside the 18 to 35 age range
- People who require a legally authorised representative to consent on their behalf
- People who score below 85 on the NIH Toolbox cognitive function test
- People with safety concerns related to MRI or brain stimulation, such as metal in the body, a pacemaker or other implanted device, a history of seizures, or claustrophobia
- People who are pregnant
