Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults who identify as Hispanic or Latino and are registered patients of Scripps Health
- People who have been diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes
- People whose HbA1c blood sugar level (a measure of average blood sugar over roughly 3 months) was 8% or higher within the last 60 days
Who may not be able to join:
- People with a serious illness that would prevent them from visiting a clinic
- People whose liver enzyme levels (ALT and AST) are more than 3 times higher than the normal range
- People with a body mass index (BMI) of 23 or below
- People with a history of cancer, unless they have been cancer-free for more than 2 years, or their only cancer was a type of non-melanoma skin cancer (basal or squamous cell carcinoma)
- People with a creatinine level (a kidney health marker) above 3.5 (confirm with trial site for units)
- People with a history of drug or alcohol misuse in the 12 months before joining the trial
- People currently enrolled in a Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) program
- People who have donated a pint or more of blood in the past 30 days, or donated plasma within the past 7 days before screening
- People who have anemia (low red blood cell levels)
- People who do not have the basic reading ability needed to take part in a text message-based program
- People with severe hearing or vision difficulties
- People whose primary language is not Spanish or English
- People who are not willing to carry a mobile phone
- People who are pregnant
- People who plan to move away from the area during the trial
