Who might be able to join this trial:
- You have been diagnosed with advanced cancer that has spread, cannot be cured, or has come back
- You are currently being seen by a palliative care team while in the hospital
- You have been diagnosed with delirium (a state of sudden confusion) according to standard medical guidelines
- You are experiencing an active or mixed form of delirium with restlessness or agitation, and have already been given medication or other measures (such as a sitter or physical restraints) to manage it
- You are 18 years of age or older
- Your main medical team has given permission for you to take part in the study
- Family caregivers may also join if they are a spouse, adult child, sibling, parent, other relative, or a partner identified by the patient
- Family caregivers must be 18 years of age or older
Who may not be able to join:
- You are already taking high regular doses of certain medications: haloperidol (more than 4 mg/day), chlorpromazine (more than 100 mg/day), or valproate (more than 750 mg/day)
- You have a history of myasthenia gravis, acute narrow-angle glaucoma, or confusion caused by liver failure
- You have significant liver problems shown in recent blood tests within the past month (confirm with trial site)
- You have a history of a serious reaction to antipsychotic medications called neuroleptic malignant syndrome
- You have had seizures within the past month
- You have a history of Parkinson's disease or dementia
- A recent heart test (ECG) within the past month showed a specific abnormality in your heart rhythm (QTc interval over 500 ms)
- You have had a known allergic reaction to haloperidol, chlorpromazine, or valproate
- You have had a pancreas inflammation (pancreatitis) within the past month
- You are currently taking lamotrigine, phenobarbital, or carbamazepine
- You are showing physical signs that death is very close (confirm with trial site)
- You are pregnant
- You currently have an active COVID-19 infection
