Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 18 and 75 years old
- People whose stomach tumour has been confirmed by a pathology test to be a type called gastric adenocarcinoma (a common form of stomach cancer)
- People who are expected to live for more than 1 year
- People whose tumour is located at the junction where the stomach meets the oesophagus (food pipe) — extending no more than 2cm into the oesophagus — or in the upper or whole stomach, and where the surgical team plans to remove the entire stomach along with surrounding lymph nodes using keyhole (laparoscopic) surgery
- People who have not had previous surgery on the upper abdomen, except for keyhole gallbladder removal
- People whose general physical condition before surgery is rated as fully active or with only minor limitations, based on a standard medical scale (ECOG score of 0 or 1)
- People whose overall fitness for anaesthesia is rated within an acceptable range on a standard medical scale (ASA score of I, II, or III)
- People who have not had radiotherapy before surgery
- People where no spread of the cancer was found either before or during surgery
- People whose organ function (such as heart, liver, and kidneys) is at a sufficient level as assessed by the treating doctor
- People who have provided written agreement to take part in the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- People who are pregnant or currently breastfeeding
- People with a body temperature of 38°C or higher before surgery, or who have an infection requiring treatment with systemic medication
- People with a severe mental health condition
- People found to have stage IV (advanced, widely spread) cancer during surgery, as defined by the AJCC 8th edition staging system (confirm with trial site)
- People with a severe lung or breathing condition
- People with severely reduced liver or kidney function
- People with unstable chest pain (angina) or who have had a heart attack within the past 6 months
- People who have had a stroke or brain bleed within the past 6 months
- People whose stomach cancer has caused a complication such as bleeding, a hole in the stomach wall, or a blockage that requires emergency surgery
- People who are planned to receive a specialised heated chemotherapy wash inside the abdomen (called HIPEC) after their surgery
