For children with autism (Case Group):

  • Your child has been formally diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) by a paediatrician or specialist doctor, using standard diagnostic guidelines
  • Your child is between 3 and 6 years old at the time of the hearing assessment
  • Your child has been referred for a specific hearing test called a BAEP (a brainwave-based hearing test)

For children without autism (Control Group):

  • Your child is developing typically for their age
  • Your child has been referred for a BAEP hearing test due to risk factors for hearing loss, or because of delayed speech and language development that needs further investigation

  • Your child's results from the BAEP hearing test fall within the normal range

Who may not be able to join:

For children with autism (Case Group):

  • Your child was diagnosed with autism after the age of 6
  • Your child has certain other conditions alongside autism, such as epilepsy, chromosomal conditions (e.g. Down syndrome or Fragile X syndrome), serious birth infections affecting hearing, hormonal or metabolic disorders (e.g. phenylketonuria), cleft palate or facial differences, or certain other neurological conditions (confirm with trial site)
  • Your child has an active ear problem at the time of the hearing test, such as an ear infection or a structural issue with the ear canal
  • Your child's BAEP hearing test shows higher-than-normal hearing thresholds (meaning reduced hearing)

For children without autism (Control Group):

  • Your child has certain other conditions, such as epilepsy, chromosomal conditions (e.g. Down syndrome or Fragile X syndrome), serious birth infections affecting hearing, hormonal or metabolic disorders (e.g. phenylketonuria), cleft palate or facial differences, or certain other neurological conditions (confirm with trial site)
