Who might be able to join this trial:

  • You are 18 years old or older
  • You have been diagnosed with grand mal epilepsy (a type of epilepsy involving full-body seizures) and are being treated with phenytoin as your only seizure medication
  • If you are a woman, you must either test negative for pregnancy before joining, or be using a reliable form of birth control

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have serious problems with your liver or kidneys
  • You currently use alcohol heavily or misuse drugs
  • You have a known allergy to any of the medications being used in this study
  • You have a known allergy to sulfonamide medications, as this may also cause a reaction to one of the study drugs (celecoxib)
  • You are pregnant or planning to become pregnant
  • You are taking any other medications that may have an effect on epilepsy or seizures
  • You are currently taking any other anti-seizure medications besides phenytoin
  • You have heart or cardiovascular disease, or you have previously had coronary artery bypass graft (heart bypass) surgery
  • You are currently taking aspirin or a medication called fluconazole (an antifungal medicine)
  • You have recently experienced bleeding in your eye (retina) or brain
