You have been diagnosed with cancer of the food pipe (oesophagus), stomach, pancreas, colon, or rectum, and are scheduled to have surgery to remove it
OR you are scheduled for open abdominal surgery for a non-cancerous, non-inflammatory condition (for example, kidney donation) and would take part as a healthy comparison participant
You are 18 years old or older
You are able to read and sign a consent form agreeing to take part
