Who might be able to join this trial:

  • Children who have been referred to a participating general pediatrician for one of the following reasons: a failed 18-month developmental screening (not related to movement or physical delays only), speech or language delay, social or emotional concerns, behavioural concerns such as inattention or hyperactivity, general developmental concerns, or a question about whether the child may have autism (ASD).
  • Children under 5 years and 6 months of age.
  • Children who live in Ontario, Canada (travel support may be available for families living more than 100 km from Toronto).

For a specific part of the trial (called the AAPLES exploratory objective), additional criteria apply. Children may be eligible for this part if:

  • The child's developmental age is assessed at 36 months or older, based on a specific assessment tool called the Mullen Scales of Early Learning.
  • The child is able to speak in short flexible phrases.

Who may not be able to join:

  • Children who have already been given a formal diagnosis of autism (ASD).

For the AAPLES exploratory part only:

  • Children who have previously completed a virtual autism diagnostic assessment.
