Who might be able to join this trial:
- Adults between the ages of 18 and 65 who have had a single, unprovoked seizure and are being seen at a First Seizure Clinic in Halifax or Kingston.
- Healthy volunteers who are a similar age, sex, and education level to the seizure patients may also be considered for a comparison group, provided they meet the same health requirements.
Who may not be able to join:
- People over the age of 65 are not eligible for this trial.
- People whose seizure is found to be caused by something specific, such as a medication, substance use, or a metabolic issue (a provoked seizure), are not eligible.
- People who, at their first clinic visit, are found to have had more than one seizure event, or who receive a diagnosis of epilepsy based on brain scan or EEG results, are not eligible.
- People who have been diagnosed with non-epileptic events (seizure-like episodes not caused by epilepsy) are not eligible.
- People who already have a prescription for anti-seizure medications are not eligible.
- People with a significant brain or nervous system condition that could affect thinking or brain function — such as a progressive neurological disorder or multiple sclerosis — are not eligible.
- People who have previously had brain surgery are not eligible.
- People who have a medical reason they cannot have an MRI scan are not eligible.
- People who are pregnant are not eligible, and people who think they may be pregnant would need to provide a negative pregnancy test before having an MRI scan (confirm with trial site).
