Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 40 and 65 years old (male or female)
- You have had type 2 diabetes for at least 3 years, with a blood sugar control level (HbA1C) between 7% and 10%, and you are already taking diabetes medications such as insulin, metformin, sulfonylureas, or SGLT2 inhibitors
- You are in a generally stable state of health
- You have not taken part in a study using an experimental drug in the past 6 months
- You are willing to take part and sign a consent form
Who may not be able to join:
- You have a reason you cannot have an MRI scan or receive the contrast dye used during MRI (confirm with trial site)
- Your kidney function is below a certain level (specifically, eGFR below 45 — a measure of how well your kidneys are working)
- You are currently taking a medication in the same drug class as the one being studied, such as semaglutide, liraglutide, or similar GLP-1 medications
- You are unable to check your own blood sugar levels at home
- You currently need more than 100 units of insulin per day
- Your blood pressure is very high and uncontrolled (top number above 180 or bottom number above 100)
- Your LDL ("bad") cholesterol is above 130 mg/dL, or you have not been on a stable cholesterol-lowering (statin) medication for at least the past 6 months
- You have taken the diabetes medication pioglitazone in the past 3 months
- You have a history of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
- You have had a heart attack, stroke, or mini-stroke (TIA) in the past
- You or a close family member have a history of a specific type of thyroid cancer (Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma) or a related condition called Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2
- You have had an allergic reaction to semaglutide or any of its ingredients
- You are currently participating in another clinical trial
- You are a woman who could become pregnant, and you are currently pregnant, breastfeeding, or plan to become pregnant within the next 15 months
