Who might be able to join this trial:

• People who show signs of difficulty managing emotions, as measured by a score of 6 or higher on a specific emotional regulation assessment tool (the EDI-R)
• People who have a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD)
• People whose ASD diagnosis was confirmed by an experienced clinician and supported by results from a standardised autism assessment tool (the ADOS-2)
• People who scored 65 or higher on a standardised intelligence assessment (the WASI-II)
• People whose primary spoken language is English
• Families who are willing to keep any prescribed medications the same throughout the study period

Who may not be able to join:

• People who have a phobia of dogs or are allergic to dogs
• People who have a history of harming or acting aggressively toward animals
• People who have been physically aggressive toward other children outside the home in the past 2 weeks in a way that caused injury
• People who have certain other significant mental health conditions that would require a different treatment approach, such as substance use disorders, psychotic disorders, schizophrenia, or bipolar disorder — as assessed by the study clinicians
• People who have a major sensory impairment that would make it difficult to take part in the study activities, such as blindness or uncorrected hearing loss
• People who do not have a legal guardian available to provide formal consent to participate
