Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged 12 to 65 years old at the time of signing the consent form.
- People who have been diagnosed with drug-resistant epilepsy (meaning seizures have not been controlled with medication), with focal, generalised, or mixed seizure types, confirmed by an epilepsy specialist.
- People whose seizures have been recorded and counted using specialist video-EEG monitoring equipment, or who have clearly visible seizure types (such as motor/movement seizures) that can be confirmed without video-EEG, based on a doctor's judgment.
- People who have a documented medical history and previous recordings that allow specialists to be confident about the type and pattern of their epilepsy.
- People who have more than 10 daytime seizures per year, and at least 2 to 4 daytime seizures per month (preferably around 4 per month) over the past 3 months, as reported by the patient or a caregiver, or confirmed by a neurologist — daytime seizures are required, not only seizures that happen during sleep.
- People whose epilepsy falls into certain recognised medical categories of seizure types, including focal, generalised, or grand mal (tonic-clonic) seizures, as determined by a specialist (confirm with trial site for specific categories).
- People who are able to use an Android or iOS smartphone, or who have a family member who can assist with this — the phone needs to stay with the patient to record brain activity, and a family member can help log seizures if needed.
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose seizures are psychogenic (non-epileptic) in nature — although if a patient has both epileptic and non-epileptic seizures and a family member can reliably tell the two apart, inclusion may be considered by a doctor.
- People with psychiatric, neurological, or other health conditions that a researcher believes could affect the study results.
- People who regularly experience more than 10 seizures per day.
- People with a continuous, ongoing seizure condition known as epilepsia partialis continua.
- People who require a legal representative to make decisions on their behalf.
- People who are pregnant.
- People whose only seizure type is absence seizures (brief blank staring episodes).
- People whose only seizure type is myoclonic seizures (sudden brief jerks) or epileptic spasms.
- People whose epilepsy falls into certain other medical categories not covered by the inclusion criteria, unless a specialist doctor determines and documents that they meet the medical criteria for inclusion (confirm with trial site).
- People who have previously taken part in a clinical trial using the mjn-SERAS device.
