Who might be able to join this trial:

For people with heart failure (Stage A/B, with preserved pumping function):

• People who have been formally diagnosed with heart failure where the heart's pumping function is preserved (pumping more than 50% of blood out with each beat)
• People whose condition has been stable for at least 3 months, with no hospital admissions during that time
• People aged 65 or older
• People who are willing to sign a written consent form to take part in the study

For people with heart failure (Stage C/D, with either preserved or reduced pumping function):

• People who have been formally diagnosed with heart failure where the heart either pumps well (over 50%) or pumps weakly (under 40%)
• People whose condition has been stable for at least 3 months, with no hospital admissions during that time
• People aged 65 or older
• People who are willing to sign a written consent form to take part in the study

For healthy volunteers:

• People aged 18 or older
• People who are able to provide written consent to participate

For people with Type 2 diabetes (without symptoms):

• People aged 18 to 75
• People with a confirmed, stable Type 2 diabetes diagnosis, recorded by a doctor or confirmed through a specific blood sugar test or a blood marker called HbA1c at 6.5% or above

Who may not be able to join:

For people with heart failure:

• People who have a medical reason why they cannot safely have an MRI scan
• People who are unable to walk or complete a 6-minute walking test
• People who have a nerve or muscle condition that could affect muscle assessment, such as motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, muscle disorders, or muscle inflammation
• People who regularly or occasionally take steroid tablets by mouth
• People who have an untreated overactive or underactive thyroid
• People who have been hospitalised due to heart failure in the past 3 months

For healthy volunteers:

• People who have had, or currently show, any signs of heart failure
• People who have risk factors known to be associated with developing heart failure, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or coronary artery disease

For people with Type 2 diabetes (without symptoms):

• People who experience chest pain (angina) or significant breathlessness limiting daily activity
• People who have significant artery disease, such as a history of heart attack, previous procedures to open blocked arteries, stroke, mini-stroke, or circulation problems in the limbs
• People who have an irregular heart rhythm known as atrial fibrillation or flutter
• People who have moderate to severe heart valve disease
• People who have a history of heart failure or a condition affecting the heart muscle
• People who have Type 1 diabetes
• People whose blood test results suggest they may actually have a form of Type 1 diabetes that developed in adulthood
• People with moderate to severe kidney disease (confirm with trial site for exact measurement details)
• People who have a medical reason why they cannot safely have an MRI scan
