Who might be able to join this trial:

  • People between the ages of 30 and 75 with type 2 diabetes
  • People with a Body Mass Index (a measure of body weight relative to height) between 21 and 45
  • People whose blood sugar control measure (HbA1c) falls between 7.0% and 11%
  • People whose kidneys are working at a sufficient level, as measured by a test called eGFR being above 60 ml/min/1.73m²
  • People whose blood pressure is at or below 160/90 mmHg
  • People who are in generally good health, based on medical history, physical examination, and a range of standard tests including blood tests, heart tracing (EKG), thyroid hormone levels, and urine tests
  • People whose weight has been stable (within 1.5 kg) over the last 3 months and who are not doing very intense exercise
  • People managing their diabetes through diet alone, or with medications called Sulfonylureas, Metformin, or a combination of both
  • People taking a medication called a GLP-1 receptor agonist, provided the dose has been stable for at least 3 months before joining the study
  • People taking a medication called a DPP-4 inhibitor, provided the dose has been stable for at least 2 months before joining the study
  • People who stopped taking an SGLT2 inhibitor at least 2 months before the screening visit
  • People taking a statin (a cholesterol-lowering medication), provided the dose has been stable for at least 3 months

Who may not be able to join:

  • People currently being treated with a class of diabetes medications called Thiazolidinediones (TZDs), or with insulin
  • People taking other medications known to affect blood sugar levels, beyond those listed in the inclusion criteria
  • People who have taken an SGLT2 inhibitor within the 2 months before their screening visit (confirm with trial site regarding whether stopping the medication early may allow eligibility to be reconsidered)
  • People with advanced diabetes-related eye disease (proliferative retinopathy) or reduced kidney function (eGFR below 60)
  • Women who are able to become pregnant, unless they are using an appropriate form of contraception
