Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are a Veteran between 18 and 65 years old who has been diagnosed with Gulf War Illness (GWI) and have ongoing stomach problems such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, or bloating
- Your stomach symptoms began during your deployment in the Persian Gulf (confirm with trial site if unsure)
- A specific gut test (called a lactulose/mannitol test) shows that your intestines are more "leaky" than normal
- You are willing and able to participate in and follow the requirements of the study
Who may not be able to join:
- You are currently taking part in another research study, or you are not able to give your formal consent to participate
- You are pregnant (based on a urine test) or currently breastfeeding
- You have a history of inflammatory bowel disease (such as Crohn's or ulcerative colitis), lactose intolerance, or celiac disease
- A breath test has shown you have too much bacteria in your small intestine
- A blood test has shown a positive result for a marker linked to celiac disease (confirm with trial site)
- You have used anti-inflammatory pain medications (like ibuprofen or naproxen) in the 2 weeks before or during the study
- You have a known allergy to glutamine or whey protein
- You have had abdominal surgery (other than removal of your gallbladder, uterus, or appendix more than 6 months ago)
- Your blood test results for kidney function (BUN and/or creatinine) are outside the normal range
- Results from part of the gut test (mannitol recovery) fall outside the normal range (confirm with trial site)
- You have a history of kidney disease
- You have an allergy to monosodium glutamate (MSG)
- You are currently taking anti-seizure medications

To determine if oral glutamine supplementation will improve the Symptom Severity Scale in Veterans with GWI and chronic GI Symptoms.; To determine if oral glutamine supplementation will restore intestinal permeability in Veterans with GWI.
