  • You have epilepsy that has not been controlled by medication, and you are planning to have (or have already had) electrodes placed on or in the brain to find where seizures start and to identify important areas for speech and movement
  • You have epilepsy, a brain tumor, or an abnormal blood vessel in the brain that is located near important brain areas, and you are planning to have (or have already had) brain mapping surgery, a special memory and language test called a Wada test, or surgery while awake
  • You are able to speak and understand English well

Who may not be able to join:

  • You have large or significant structural abnormalities in the brain that may have shifted the normal locations of important brain areas (confirm with trial site)
  • You have difficulty with thinking, understanding, or learning that would make it hard to participate in testing
  • You have a pacemaker, metal clips in the brain for a blood vessel problem, or other metal implants in your body that could move during a scan
  • You have severe claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces) and cannot have an MRI scan without being sedated
