Who might be able to join this trial:
For all participants:
- People who are native Italian speakers with Italian as their only language
- People aged between 18 and 60 years old
- People with normal vision, or vision that is fully corrected with glasses or contact lenses
- People who have given written and verbal agreement to take part in the study
- People taking psychiatric medications (such as sleeping tablets, antipsychotics, or antidepressants) whose dose has remained unchanged for more than 4 weeks
For patients with drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE):
- People diagnosed with a type of focal epilepsy where no clear cause has been found
- People for whom at least 2 epilepsy medications have not worked at appropriate doses
- People who have had at least 3 seizures in the last 2 months
- People who have had a brain MRI scan taken within the last 5 years
For patients with well-controlled epilepsy (DSE):
- People diagnosed with a type of focal epilepsy where no clear cause has been found, whose seizures are controlled after trying no more than 2 epilepsy medications
- People who have been seizure-free for at least 6 months
- People who have had a brain MRI scan taken within the last 5 years
For patients newly diagnosed with epilepsy (NDE):
- People diagnosed with a type of focal epilepsy where no clear cause has been found within the last 3 months
- People who have tried no more than 1 epilepsy medication
- People who have had a brain MRI scan taken within the last 3 months
Who may not be able to join:
- People over 60 years of age
- People with a documented history of developmental delay
- People whose brain scan shows specific abnormalities in brain structure, except for a condition called hippocampal sclerosis (a particular type of scarring in the brain)
- People with a degenerative neurological condition (a condition causing progressive damage to the nervous system)
- People with a history of other significant health conditions, including certain cancers diagnosed within the last 3 years, abnormal liver or kidney function, other neurological or psychiatric conditions, serious head injury, heart problems, or blood vessel problems in the brain
- People with a history of alcohol or drug misuse
