Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 30 and 70 years old
- People who have been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, either managed with the medication metformin only, or not using any blood sugar-lowering medication at all
- People whose blood sugar control measure (called HbA1c) is at a certain level — at or above 48 mmol/mol — with or without blood sugar-lowering medication (confirm exact eligibility with trial site)
- People who have had type 2 diabetes for less than 7 years

Who may not be able to join:
- People whose blood sugar control levels are above certain thresholds depending on whether they are taking no medication, one blood sugar-lowering medication, or two or more blood sugar-lowering medications (confirm specific thresholds with trial site)
- People diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes, MODY diabetes, Type 1½ diabetes, or LADA diabetes
- People whose kidneys are not functioning well enough, based on a blood test taken at screening
- People currently taking any blood sugar-lowering medication other than metformin — for example, insulin, or several other medication types including GLP-1 medications, SGLT-2 inhibitors, or others (confirm full list with trial site)
- People who have metal in their body that would make an MRI scan unsafe
- People with known or suspected moderate to severe diabetes-related complications affecting the eyes, nerves, or kidneys
- People with a known cancer diagnosis
- People with lung disease, other than asthma that is well-controlled with a standard inhaler and does not change with the seasons
- People with known heart or blood vessel disease
- People with known overactive thyroid disease
- People with signs of underactive thyroid disease, or whose thyroid medication has been changed in the last 3 months
- People with known liver disease, based on certain blood test results being significantly elevated
- People with a known autoimmune disease
- People with psoriasis that requires systemic (whole-body) treatment, or with skin patches larger than 25 cm² in total
- People with another hormonal condition that causes weight gain or obesity
- People currently taking weight-loss medication
- People currently taking anti-inflammatory medication
- People who have lost more than 5 kg in weight in the last 6 months
- People whose depression symptoms have changed, or whose antidepressant medication has changed, in the last 3 months
- People with a diagnosed psychiatric disorder or who are taking antipsychotic medication
- People who have had thoughts or behaviours related to suicide in the last 3 months
- People who have previously had surgery for obesity (liposuction performed more than 1 year ago may be an exception — confirm with trial site)
- People who are pregnant, considering becoming pregnant, or currently breastfeeding
- People with physical limitations that would prevent them from doing intensive exercise
- People already taking part in another research intervention study
- People with a high level of protein in their urine (macroalbuminuria), based on a screening blood sample
- People whose blood tests show signs of another significant medical condition
- People whose blood tests show the presence of a specific antibody linked to certain types of diabetes (GAD65 antibody)
- People with any physical findings that make intensive exercise unsafe
- People with any other findings discovered during screening that would make participation unsafe
- People who are unable to commit the time required to complete the trial
- People who face language barriers, or who are otherwise unable to understand, consent to, or complete the trial activities
