Who might be able to join this trial:
- Children and teenagers between 1 and 18 years old (male or female) who have partial epilepsy that has not responded well to treatment and whose doctors are considering surgery as a possible option.
- People whose epilepsy has not been controlled despite trying at least two different seizure medications, either separately or together.
- People who show epileptic spike activity on a standard or high-resolution EEG (brainwave test) and/or on a MEG (magnetoencephalography) brain scan.
- People who are having or have had a structural MRI (a detailed brain scan).
- People who have agreed to take part in a related study called PerEpi 1, which looks at identifying where seizures start in the brain and how to adjust brain stimulation settings.
- People who experience at least 4 seizures per month.
Who may not be able to join:
- People who do not fall within the required age range.
- People who have generalised epilepsy (where seizures affect the whole brain, rather than starting in one specific area).
- People who have widespread epileptic spike activity spread across the brain rather than in a specific area.
- People who have a serious decline in their overall health or vital body functions.
- Children where a parent or guardian refuses to give consent, or where the child themselves refuses to participate.
- People who are pregnant, in labour, or currently breastfeeding.
- People for whom a specific type of brain stimulation used in this trial (mc-tDCS) would not be safe, particularly if it could trigger seizures (confirm with trial site).
