Who might be able to join this trial:
- People who are 18 years of age or older (and no older than 75)
- People who have epilepsy that has not been controlled by medication, as defined by the International League Against Epilepsy (confirm with trial site)
- People who are scheduled to have a specific type of brain stimulation device (DBS leads) placed on both sides of the brain in an area called the anterior nucleus of the thalamus
- People whose kidneys and liver are working well enough, based on blood tests taken within 3 weeks before joining the study (confirm with trial site for specific values)
- People whose blood clotting, red blood cell levels, platelet counts, and immune cell levels fall within acceptable ranges on recent blood tests
- People whose epilepsy has been confirmed by a specialist, with seizures that start in a specific area of the brain, with or without spreading
- People whose seizures have not been adequately controlled after trying at least two appropriate seizure medications at proper doses
- People whose seizure-starting area in the brain cannot be surgically removed, or who have already had surgery that did not work
- People (or their legal guardian) who are able to fully understand the study and provide written and verbal consent
Who may not be able to join:
- People who have previously had a brain procedure for epilepsy
- People who have a tumour in the brain
- People who are currently pregnant
- People with a history of cancer that has not been in remission for at least 5 years
- People with a history of diabetes, chronic kidney failure, or other significant ongoing health conditions that affect the immune system
- People with a history of drug or alcohol abuse
- People who are allergic to any ingredient in the study treatment
- People older than 75 years of age
- Adults who have significant cognitive impairment
