Who might be able to join this trial:
- People aged between 18 and 75 years old
- People whose cancer has been confirmed by a laboratory test to be a type called adenocarcinoma
- People whose cancer is located in the upper part of the stomach or at the junction where the stomach meets the food pipe (a specific type called Siewert II or III)
- People with upper stomach adenocarcinoma whose cancer is at an early stage meeting specific staging criteria called cT1N0M0 (confirm with trial site)
- People with junction adenocarcinoma whose cancer meets specific early staging criteria called cT1-2N0M0, with no sign of cancer spread to distant lymph nodes (confirm with trial site)
- People whose surgery would leave clear margins of more than 2 cm on both sides, and where more than half of the stomach can be kept
- People who have not had previous upper abdominal surgery (having had a keyhole gallbladder removal is acceptable)
- People who have not had chemotherapy, radiation, targeted therapy, or immunotherapy before surgery
- People with a good general activity level before surgery, rated 0 or 1 on a standard medical scale (confirm with trial site)
- People considered fit enough for anaesthesia, rated within a specific range on a standard anaesthesia assessment scale (confirm with trial site)
- People whose major organs such as the heart, liver, and kidneys are functioning well
- People who have given signed agreement to take part in the trial
Who may not be able to join:
- People whose pre-surgery assessment shows the cancer has grown into nearby structures, or shows significantly enlarged or distantly spread lymph nodes
- People who are pregnant or breastfeeding
- People with a severe mental illness
- People with a temperature of 38°C or higher before surgery, or who have an infection requiring treatment throughout the body
- People with serious lung disease where breathing tests show lung function below 50% of the expected level
- People who have had another type of cancer in the past 5 years
- People with severe liver or kidney problems
- People who have had unstable chest pain or a heart attack in the past 6 months
- People who have had a stroke or brain bleed in the past 6 months (not including old, previously treated infarcts)
- People who have used steroid medications throughout their body in the past month
- People who need emergency surgery because of a stomach cancer complication such as bleeding, a hole in the stomach wall, or blockage
- People who have taken part in, or are currently taking part in, another clinical trial within the past 6 months
