Who might be able to join this trial:
- You are between 18 and 75 years old
- If you are able to have children, you are willing to use highly effective birth control during the trial
- You have a confirmed history of seizures that start in the hippocampus (a part of the brain), with seizure activity detected on both sides of the brain using brain wave (EEG) tests
- Brain scans (MRI) show scarring in both hippocampi, OR a special type of scan (FDG PET) shows reduced activity in both sides of the temporal region of the brain, OR one side shows evidence on MRI and the other on the PET scan — and these scans were done within the last 3 years
- You have had at least four seizures per month on average over the past 6 months, including at least two per month that others could observe
- You have already tried at least two different seizure medications without enough success, in your doctor's opinion
- Your current seizure medications and any other drugs that may affect seizure frequency have not changed for at least three months
- You are able to speak and read English or Spanish and can take part in study activities and sign a consent form
Who may not be able to join:
- Your epilepsy is caused by another or worsening brain disease
- There is evidence that your seizures are starting somewhere outside the hippocampus
- Your brain scans show a possible tumour anywhere in the brain, or a non-cancerous growth outside the hippocampus that could be causing seizures (a small, non-invasive meningioma away from the affected area may be acceptable — confirm with trial site)
- Your seizures do not have a specific starting point in the brain
- You have had a prolonged seizure emergency (status epilepticus) in the past year
- You have had seizures caused by psychological rather than brain electrical activity (PNES) within the past 3 years
- You have a serious psychiatric condition
- You have a condition that significantly weakens your immune system
- You are currently pregnant or breastfeeding
- You have made a suicide attempt in the past year
- You have other significant health conditions that could make participation unsafe
